چکیده

-This review article aims to set the scene for the entire conference. It describes a number of areas where important progress has recently been made, as well as commenting on more established understanding. The review covers (i) defect states, structures and energies, (ii) point defects in or near thermodynamic equilibrium and (iii) the production of defects by irradiation and radiation damage phenomena. Attention is particularly drawn to new experimental and theoretical techniques and their implications (for example, low temperature electron microscopy and nanosecond pulse irradiations on the experimental side, vibronic nlodels of colour centres and computer simulations of defects on the theoretical side). The growing knowledge of defect structure and defect production which these, and more established, techniques give is likely rapidly to advance the understanding of more complex processes (e. g. irradiation hardening, diffusion in more highly defective solids, etc.).
